DEUTSCH

Werde ein echter Sherpa (!) und trage einen kleinen Teil des Gepäcks, das wir benötigen, um den Ärzten des Tilganga Eye Hospital in Nepal und des Himalayan Cataract Project deutschlandweit und weltweit eine Stimme zu geben!

Wir wollen diese Geschichte über die Arbeit von Dr. Sanduk Ruit aus Nepal und Dr. Geoff Tabin aus den USA auch dem deutschen Publikum zur Verfügung stellen. Dazu brauchen wir Geld: für die Herstellung der deutschen Fassung, für die Produktion der DVD und der dazugehörigen Musik-CD.

Diese "Independent Production" wurde von uns selbst ohne Filmförderung und Fernsehgelder produziert, weil uns das Projekt am Herzen lag. Auf diesem Wege wollen wir mit Hilfe unkonventioneller Kanäle ein großes Publikum erreichen.

Folgendes steht aus, um diese Arbeit auch in Deutschland vorstellen zu dürfen:

• Schnitt/Montage des Making-of-Materials für die "Special Section" der DVD: 1120€
• Schnitt/Montage der deutschen Fassung: 2400€
• Sprecheraufnahmen für die deutsche Fassung und Tonstudiokosten: 1900€
• DVD-Produktion (Director's cut): 1950€
• Soundtrack-CD-Produktion: 1200€

Zwei Ärzte und ihr chirurgisches Team mit einheimischen Helfern wandern mit einer kompletten Krankenhaus-Ausrüstung auf dem Rücken durch das Hochland am Rand des Himalaya im östlichen Nepal, um erblindete Menschen in den abgelegenen Bergregionen vom "grauen Star" zu befreien. Für die arme Landbevölkerung dort ist das eine Art Rettung aus ihrer ausweglosen Situation. Sie könnten weder die Reise nach Kathmandu bewältigen, noch sich die kostspielige Operation im dortigen Krankenhaus leisten.

Der "graue Star" ist Auslöser für rund die Hälfte aller Erblindungen auf der Welt, ausgelöst durch die Ernährungs- und Lebensbedingungen in den Entwicklungsländern. Wie hier in Nepal ist die Trübung der Augenlinse vielerorts eine Volkskrankheit, obwohl sie durch einen einfachen Eingriff heilbar ist. Viele junge Menschen müssen häufig schon mit der Blindheit leben.

„Out of the Darkness“ begleitet die Wanderärzte mit Dr. Sanduk Ruit aus Nepal und seinem amerikanischen Kollegen Dr. Geoff Tabin in die Berge des Himalaya. Sie haben ein hoch qualitatives Konzept entwickelt, mit dem sie den „grauen Star“ schnell und kostengünstig vor Ort in den Dörfern der Einheimischen heilen können. So vollbringen sie für wenig Geld eine Art Wunder: Sie operieren ein Auge für umgerechnet 25 Euro in einer Operationszeit von fünf Minuten. Der Eingriff ins Auge ist nicht nur ein Segen für die Betroffenen selbst, sondern hat großen Einfluss auf die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung ganzer Gemeinschaften in den Bergen des Himalaya. Ein Independent-Film, der sich von der Herzensenergie der Ärzte mit den Helfern hat inspirieren lassen.

Become a real Sherpa (!) and help us carry a small portion of the heavy financial weight. Help us give the doctors of the Tilganga Eye Hospital and of the Himalayan Cataract Project a voice in Germany and Worldwide!

Out of the Darkness has been shown internationally at many Film Festivals in USA and around the world but not yet in Germany. Because this is an independent German production, we would like to share the story of Dr. Sanduk Ruit  (Nepal) und Dr. Geoff Tabin (USA) it with a large audience also here in Germany. We also would like to produce a Special Edition DVD with subtitles in English, Nepali, French, German, Italian and a Soundtrack Music CD with compositions of Nepalese Flute Master Prem Rana (Autari) and film composer Markus Aust.

In order to achieve this we need the finances for completing the following: 

• Editing of the Making-of and Special Section which will be included in the DVD: 1120€
• Editing of the German version of Out of the Darkness: 2400€
• Speaker and audio recording for the German version of Out of the Darkness: 1900€
• Professional Production of the DVD (Director's cut): 1950€
• Production Soundtrack Music CD: 1200€

A Documentary about the effort of two humanitarian doctors dedicated to eradicate preventable blindness in the remotest regions on Earth

SYNOPSIS

More than half of the world’s preventable blindness is caused by cataract disease, a clouding of the clear lens of the eye. In developing countries like Nepal, it is not only a personal tragedy, but can devestate the economy of entire communities. Fortunately, it is also easy to cure. Cataract surgery is one of the most effective medical interventions on earth, but until recently was considered too expensive to provide to the rural poor.

Most of the world’s blind people live in remote, impoverished areas. The majority of doctors able to cure them work in cities. Dr. Sanduk Ruit from Nepal, and his American partner, Dr. Geoff Tabin, have made perfecting a portable low cost surgical procedure to restore sight their life‘s work. They trek to Nepal’s remote Northeast, carrying an entire hospital on porters‘ backs.  Their mission is to bring the needlessly blind out of the darkness.  

Out of the darkness gives an insight about Dr. Ruit's method and follows his work up to his home town village, where he returns after 30 years of absence. The journey to the village is also a journey in Dr. Ruit's personal life. We learn about his motivations and what made him one of the most accredited surgeons worldwide. Dr. Ruits wants to give to his own people the service he had offered to so many other people around the world. With only 25 USD per eye-surgery and a 5 minutes intervention, his surgical method is able to transform people's life. The clouded lens of the cataract-affected eye is replaced by an intra-ocular implant produced in Nepal and allows a complete restoration of the eyesight. Because Dr.Ruit's operation theatre is transportable by foot, it can be installed everywhere, also in the most unreachable places on Earth.

Out of the darkness also accompanies two patients, young Sangeeta, affected by congenital cararact since birth and a elderly lady, Sukmati who's eyes have been blind for more than seven years, and follows their overnight transformation.
